Icelandic authorities announced today, Sunday, that evacuation operations are taking place in the "Blue Lagoon" area and the nearby town of "Grindavik" due to a volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The Icelandic Meteorological Office stated in a release that lava is flowing rapidly towards northern Grindavik, similar to what occurred during the eruption on February 8 of this year. The office noted that the volcanic eruption has caused a ground fissure 3 kilometers long, extending from the Stora-Skógfelli area to Hagavellir.
The Blue Lagoon area is a popular tourist destination in Iceland, located in the southwestern part of the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is home to Keflavik International Airport. The Blue Lagoon area had previously been evacuated due to seismic activity earlier this month and was closed for a week in November after 1,400 earthquakes were recorded there.
