Maritime sources revealed to Reuters today, Thursday, that oil shipments transported on Maersk's tankers have the option to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope due to the deteriorating security situation in the Red Sea. The sources confirmed that Maersk was the one that issued the advisory report that has been circulated. A maritime source stated, "This is primarily a safety option for the cargo charterers in light of the daily situation." The circulated warning indicated that due to the "rapidly escalating situation in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in Yemen, all vessels and transits through the strait must have the option to proceed via the Cape of Good Hope due to safety concerns." Some shipping companies have already chosen to reroute their vessels via the Cape of Good Hope, away from the Red Sea, which increases travel duration and costs.
