Iraq: Arrest of Nearly 800 Terrorists and Criminal Suspects

Samarra Operations Commander in Iraq, Major General Ali Mathjel Al-Maliki, confirmed today, Friday, the arrest of 65 terrorists and 727 suspects wanted on criminal charges. Al-Maliki stated that "security forces carried out several operations recently that resulted in the killing of one terrorist and the arrest of 65 others, in addition to the seizure and destruction of 196 hideouts and weapon caches, and the disabling of 64 explosive devices left behind by ISIS."

He added that "the operations also resulted in the arrest of 727 suspects wanted on criminal charges, and the confiscation of a tanker and a modified vehicle used to smuggle foreign labor illegally, as well as several others without official approvals passing through checkpoints." Al-Maliki confirmed "no security breaches occurred during the last six months," noting that "efforts are ongoing to clear uninhabited areas of ISIS remnants through military engineering personnel and search and inspection operations, as well as clearing islands and swamps from bushes and reeds."

He continued that "efforts are also ongoing to implement the security plan for the pilgrimage of Imam Al-Kadhim, peace be upon him, and for the movement of pilgrims, in addition to foreign tourism within the area of responsibility."
