A witness told Reuters that the explosion, which occurred at Guinea's only main oil storage and loading platform, shook the Kaloum administrative area in central Conakry, shattering windows in several nearby homes and forcing hundreds to flee the area. A large fire and black smoke were seen rising from several miles away as firefighters rushed to the scene, and many fuel trucks left the explosion site quickly, accompanied by soldiers and police. A government spokesperson from Guinea has not yet responded to a request for comment.
