U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed on Monday that the United States is working on an agreement regarding hostages between Israel and the Hamas movement that could lead to a period of calm in Gaza lasting at least six weeks. Biden added to reporters after talks with Jordanian King Abdullah, “We are working hard for peace, security, and dignity for both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples. I am working on this day and night.” He continued, “The U.S. response in Iraq and Syria continues.”
For his part, the Jordanian king stated that “military action in Rafah cannot be tolerated” and emphasized that “the separation between the West Bank and Gaza cannot be accepted.” He affirmed, “The role of UNRWA is essential, and it must continue to provide assistance to Gaza, as it is also fulfilling its duty in Jordan. We must work together with our Arab brothers to achieve a ceasefire.” He added, “The ongoing escalation by settlers and the threats against worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque are unacceptable.”
