Senegal Elects Its Fifth President Today

Voters in Senegal headed to the polls today, Sunday, to cast their votes for the country's fifth president in postponed elections. According to Senegalese state television, approximately 7.3 million people are eligible to vote, with vote counting set to begin as soon as the polling stations close, and preliminary results are expected by March 26. Nineteen candidates are competing to succeed President Macky Sall, who is stepping down after a second term marked by violent unrest. Without any opinion polls, it is unclear if any candidate will be able to secure more than 50 percent of the votes to avoid a runoff.
