British authorities announced on Friday that they are "investigating the accidental sending of emails from the Ministry of Defence to an incorrect recipient," following reports that messages intended for the U.S. military intelligence ended up in Mali, a Russian ally. The Times reported that officials from the Ministry of Defence were trying to contact the U.S. Department of Defence (the Pentagon) but mistakenly sent the emails to Mali due to a similar internet domain name. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence stated: "We have opened an investigation after some emails were accidentally forwarded to an incorrect email domain." They added: "We are confident that they do not contain any information that could jeopardize operational security or technical data."
