A Glimmer of Hope Remains: Children in Sudan at Risk of Collective Loss

As the war continues for months in Sudan between the army and Rapid Support Forces, displacing thousands fleeing from the fighting, the United Nations renewed its warning about the imminent danger to children. UNICEF representative in Sudan, Mandy O'Brien, stated on Friday that there is little hope left to prevent a "collective loss" of children's lives and futures in the country. She confirmed that 14 million children need humanitarian assistance, while four million children have become displaced.

She also warned that millions are suffering from hunger and acute malnutrition. The UNICEF representative called for an immediate ceasefire, the provision of more resources, and unhindered access to save millions of children who are struggling to survive. These warnings came after Save the Children reported days ago that nearly 230,000 children and pregnant women, as well as new mothers, could die in the coming months due to hunger unless urgent life-saving funding is released to respond to the escalating crisis in Sudan.

The statements reflect the extent of deterioration in the ability of humanitarian organizations to reach those in need in Sudan, amid unprecedented funding shortages. The World Health Organization had previously warned that conflict-affected areas in Sudan are at risk of "catastrophic" famine.
