The President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, sent a written message to Jordan's King Abdullah II. The Emirati news agency reported on Wednesday that "the message pertains to bilateral relations and includes an official invitation to participate in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28), scheduled to be held in Expo City Dubai in November."
Sheikh Khalifa bin Mohamed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, the UAE Ambassador to Jordan, delivered the message to Jafar Hassan, Director of King Abdullah's Office. In January, the UAE appointed Minister of Industry Sultan Al Jaber as the President of the UN Climate Conference "COP 28," which will take place in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. The appointment came approximately two months after the UAE assumed the presidency of the conference from Egypt, which hosted COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh in 2022.
The presidency of the UN conference involves "leading the intergovernmental process to reconcile viewpoints and facilitate consensus for raising global climate ambition." The conference is expected to attract over 70,000 participants, including heads of state, government officials, international leaders from the industry sector, private sector representatives, academics, experts, youth, and non-governmental organizations, according to official Emirati estimates.
It is noteworthy that the "United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change" was launched in 1992 in Brazil, and the Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings have been held annually under the auspices of the United Nations since 1995, aiming to find solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
