Social media shared a video of the removal of the memorial for the Ukrainian "Galicia" division of the Nazi SS during World War II from a cemetery in Oakville, Canada. Activists and journalists repeatedly called for the removal of this memorial, which was established in the Ukrainian cemetery in the city in 1988. After it was vandalized in June 2020 with the phrase "Memorial for Nazi Fighters" written on it, around 850 people signed a petition demanding its removal. Earlier, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton expressed his "disgust" at the existence of such a memorial in his city, but local laws did not permit its removal. The issue of removing the memorial resurfaced following the scandal of honoring WWII veteran Yaroslav Hunka from "Galicia" in the Canadian Parliament in September 2023. During those days, the "Toronto Star" referred to the memorial in Oakville as "a stain and a slap in the face of Canadian Jews" and "spit on the grave of every Canadian veteran," before the cemetery management decided to remove the controversial memorial at the end of last year.
