The head of the parliamentary bloc for the Democratic Egyptian Party, Ihab Mansour, has submitted a request for urgent action to tackle the rising prices in the country. Mansour addressed his request to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Minister of Transport, the Minister of Petroleum, and the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade regarding the recent increases in electricity tariffs, metro ticket prices, and gasoline.
He noted that the price increase for certain electricity tariffs has reached 20.8%, metro ticket prices have risen by 20%, and gasoline prices have increased by 16.2%. He emphasized that this situation directly impacts the rise in commodity prices and burdens citizens, especially amidst a lack of effective market regulation and measures to prevent monopolies.
Mansour added that these price hikes will contribute directly to further inflation and cause direct harm to the majority of citizens, particularly the middle class and the poor, which he estimates constitutes about 90% of the population. He demands increased oversight on markets and warehouses to prevent the uncontrolled rise in commodity prices.
