The Islamic Jihad Movement has announced its non-participation in the meeting of the general secretaries of Palestinian factions, which is taking place today, Sunday, in the Egyptian capital under the patronage of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Khader Habib, a leader in the movement, stated in an interview with Anadolu Agency that the reason for the movement's refusal to attend the meeting is the Palestinian Authority's failure to release political detainees. He considered that "no valuable results will emerge from the meeting because it has doomed itself to failure from the very beginning due to the Palestinian Authority's unresponsiveness to the release of detainees."
On July 27, the Palestinian Authority's security forces arrested a group of "lawbreakers who assaulted the police station in the town of Jaba and burned a large part of it, in addition to a police vehicle, taking advantage of the public's preoccupation with the situation in Jenin and its camp," according to Jenin Governor Akram Rajoub. Rajoub stated in a statement at the time that "security arrested several involved individuals and suspects regardless of any political motivations or organizational affiliations; the perpetrators belong to several organizations, including Jihad and Hamas, and the first arrested individual was from the Fatah movement."
Palestinians are turning their attention to Cairo, awaiting the outcomes of the meeting of the general secretaries of Palestinian factions. The Palestinian public has expressed hope for a unified political and popular program among the factions to confront Israeli escalation and settlement expansion plans.
