U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris experienced an awkward moment during her visit to Puerto Rico on Friday, where she was seen happily applauding a Spanish protest song before suddenly stopping upon realizing the lyrics were directed at her personally and at the foreign policies of the U.S. administration.
Videos showed Harris clapping and smiling as a group drummed and sang in Spanish during her trip to Puerto Rico, her face filled with joy believing they were welcoming her. However, her expression changed after one of her aides leaned in to speak with her—likely to translate the song’s lyrics—causing her to stop clapping, lower her hands, and adopt a more serious facial expression.
The song was a protest anthem questioning: “We want to know, Kamala, what did you come to do? We want to know, Kamala, what will happen?” After making statements in the capital of the territory, San Juan, Harris stopped in the Santurce neighborhood to tour the Joyuco Community Center and listen to community leaders, according to Fox News. This visit marks Harris's first trip to the Caribbean island since taking office.
