Colombia Surprises Brazil and Uruguay Defeats Argentina Led by Messi

Brazil lost for the second consecutive match in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, falling to Colombia, which rallied to achieve a surprising 2-1 victory over the five-time champions last night. Brazil has not won in its last three matches and has dropped to fifth place in the South American qualifiers with seven points. It was a brilliant evening for Liverpool striker Cameron Diaz, who scored two goals within four minutes in the second half to secure the surprising victory for his team, just days after his father was released following a kidnapping in Colombia. Brazil had taken the lead in the fourth minute of the match through striker Gabriel Martinelli.

In Buenos Aires, Uruguay earned a deserving victory over Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, with a score of two goals to none at the famous La Bombonera Stadium, with goals from Ronald Araújo and Darwin Núñez, each scoring once in each half. Uruguay was the better team from start to finish, and with this win, they moved to second place in the qualifiers with ten points, two points ahead of Argentina, which lost its first points after five matches in the South American qualifiers so far. Colombia is now in third place with nine points, just one point ahead of Venezuela, which drew 0-0 at home with Ecuador. Ecuador occupies sixth place, just one point ahead of Brazil.
