British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warned on Wednesday that "Britain is slipping into mob rule" and that the police would need to make greater efforts to protect democracy in the country. This comes after the government announced additional funding to ensure the safety of Members of Parliament.
In a meeting with police leaders, Sunak stated, "There is a growing consensus that mob rule is replacing democratic governance. We all need to urgently change that." He added, "We cannot simply allow this pattern of violent behavior and increasing intimidation, which is clearly aimed at stifling free debate and preventing elected representatives from doing their jobs. This is simply contrary to democracy."
The parliament descended into chaos last week amid rising tensions over a vote relating to Gaza, where the Speaker of the House cited "terrifying" threats against lawmakers as justification for deviating from normal parliamentary procedures.
