When Does Tooth Pain Indicate Heart Problems?

Dr. Suna Isakova, an oncology specialist, points out that pain in the lower jaw may indicate heart diseases. According to her, typical symptoms of heart diseases include pain behind the sternum, which can radiate to the shoulder blade, arm, stomach, or jaw. However, in some cases, the pain may be localized solely in the lower jaw.

In a conversation with Gazeta.Ru, she mentions, "About 10 percent of patients with cardiovascular diseases may experience tooth pain, thinking it's due to trigeminal nerve inflammation or other dental issues. However, such pain may indicate heart problems, as it occurs due to the transmission of pain impulses along the nerve fibers that have their 'roots' in both the lower jaw and the heart."

She notes that pain in cases of angina usually occurs against the backdrop of physical activity and disappears at rest. She adds, "It is difficult to rule out a heart attack in such cases, but information on the history of chronic diseases, characteristics of the pain, and previous episodes, if any, can assist the doctor in diagnosing the cause."

The doctor recommends consulting a physician if the pain intensifies or recurs.
