The municipal council of the city of Sidon elected Hazem Badi' as president by acclamation, and Abdullah Kan'an as vice president following a competition with Mohamed Hasib Al-Bazari. The voting results favored Kan'an, who received widespread support from council members. A meeting of the Sidon Municipality Council was held at the invitation of its acting president, Ibrahim Al-Bassat, focusing on the election of a president and vice president, attended by 15 members including the resigned president, Mohamed Al-Suadi. There was a consensus on Badi' taking over the presidency of the municipality, while a vote took place for the vice presidency, resulting in support for Kan'an. It is noted that the Southern Governor, Mansour Dba, will invite a formal session for the election, which is expected to take place on Monday morning, August 14, 2023. Badi' thanked the president and all colleagues for their great trust, stating, "I will work for the municipality and its council to remain one family," noting that the circumstances are difficult, "but we will try our best to serve our people in the city of Sidon despite all these conditions and the collapse, and we ask God to help us bear the responsibility." For his part, Kan'an pointed out that the situation is tough and the state is in disintegration, "and may God help us serve our people as we have done previously in the hardest conditions with minimal resources. We rely on the love and solidarity of the people to serve the city that we were born in with our ancestors and that we love and care for."
