Orthopedic specialist Dr. Mikhail Rizantsev indicates that "cracking in the back is not a disease if it does not cause pain. However, the appearance of pain is a sign of several conditions." In an interview with Gazeta.Ru, he stated, "The cracking in the spine can occur for various reasons, including weak muscle support and functional disorders such as herniation and protrusions. Additionally, this body's response may be an indirect sign of arthritis."
According to him, the cracking and feeling of friction in the spine can be due to mechanical contact of joint surfaces, and does not require treatment. Young, thin girls are often prone to this phenomenon. He says, "Joint cracking is quite common because there are many places in our body where tendons and muscles are next to skeletal structures, and during movement, joints may rub against each other or slip or jump." Another reason for cracking is the free carbon dioxide bubbles during displacement, which is called physiological popping.
The doctor recommends consulting a physician if the cracking causes pain, swelling, or discomfort. According to him, in cases of treating the conditions causing the cracking, and in the absence of indications for surgery, patients often undergo a course of physical therapy, massage, and specific exercises.
