New European Sanctions Package on Russia

The European Union has imposed new restrictions on exports and imports to and from Russia as part of the new 12th sanctions package. The restrictions include "the import and export of products such as aluminum, copper wire, chemicals, technologies, and software," according to a statement from the European Council. Additionally, the EU has required "European companies to include in contracts with partners a prohibition on re-exporting several goods to Russia." The statement noted that "today's decision mandates EU exporters to prohibit re-exports to Russia and the use of products in Russia." It further stated that "today's decision expands the list of prohibited goods that could contribute to the technological enhancement of the Russian defense and security sector, including chemicals, lithium batteries, thermal regulators, direct current motors, production equipment, and spare parts."
