The Indian Navy announced that it has rescued 23 crew members of an Iranian fishing vessel that was hijacked by armed pirates off the coast of Somalia. The Indian Navy stated in a release on Friday that the fishing vessel "Alcambur 786" was in a location southwest of Yemen's Socotra Island on March 28 when nine pirates reportedly boarded it. The Navy added that they intercepted the vessel using two ships to begin "intensive tactical measures that lasted over 12 hours," forcing the pirates to surrender. In a statement on Saturday, the Navy clarified that the nine pirates are being transported to India under local laws concerning piracy in high seas. They also mentioned that the 23-member crew, all Pakistani, are safe and have received necessary medical examinations before being allowed to continue their fishing activities.
