Newcastle United, competing in the English Premier League, announced on Sunday that captain Jamaal Lascelles will be sidelined for six to nine months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear during Saturday's 4-3 victory over West Ham United. Lascelles left the field in the 17th minute due to an injury to his right knee, and the club stated that he will undergo surgery next week, effectively ending his season. Newcastle said in a statement, "After consulting with a specialist, he is expected to undergo surgery next week and will be out for six to nine months." Earlier this month, Newcastle had extended Lascelles' contract, keeping the 30-year-old defender at the club until 2025.
