Local sources in the Al-Hudaydah governorate in western Yemen reported on Wednesday that the bodies of 14 women and children who died in a boat sinking were recovered. The boat was carrying 25 people off the coast of Kamaran Island in the Red Sea. The sources clarified that "11 individuals survived the incident, including six who were rescued and are receiving treatment at the Al-Thawra General Hospital in Al-Hudaydah city."
Recently, incidents of fishing boat drownings have increased, especially off the western coast of Yemen, where dozens of fishermen have lost their lives due to bad weather conditions and the wind season, which lasts from November to April. Officials from the General Authority for Maritime Affairs attributed the rise in boat sinking incidents in the western coastal areas of Yemen to the high cost and scarcity of fuel, which compels fishermen to use smaller boats to save costs. This has resulted in an increase in drowning incidents since small wooden boats cannot withstand the high seas.
