Chinese health authorities announced today, Sunday, that they have discovered two cases of monkeypox in the city of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province, southern China, and have isolated them for treatment. The regional center for disease control and prevention stated, "Two cases of monkeypox virus infection have been identified in Guangzhou, a 43-year-old man and a 29-year-old man." The center added that health authorities decided to isolate both individuals, who are receiving treatment in a specialized hospital, noting that they are experiencing mild symptoms of the disease. Earlier this week, the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported two cases of monkeypox in the Chinese capital, one being imported and the other resulted from close contact with the first case. The World Health Organization had previously lifted the public health emergency declared in August due to the outbreak of monkeypox.
