Chinese Central Television (CCTV), citing the China Earthquake Networks Center, reported that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook Tajikistan at approximately 8:37 AM (0037 GMT) at a depth of ten kilometers. The television stated that the epicenter of the earthquake is about 82 kilometers from the nearest point on the border with China, and residents in the cities of Kashgar and Artush in the western part of China's Xinjiang region felt it. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.8, hitting eastern Tajikistan near the border with China.
