Earthquake Shakes New York City and Closes Airports

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck today, Friday, across New York City and its surrounding suburbs, as well as New Jersey in the United States. New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated, "We are assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will keep the public informed throughout the day." The earthquake's epicenter was near the White House Station in New Jersey, approximately 40 miles west of New York City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

U.S. authorities closed John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports in the evening following the earthquake. Governor Hochul said, "John F. Kennedy Airport and Newark Airport in New York have suspended their operations after the earthquake, and they are being evaluated for potential aftershocks." She added, "I would like to inform you that operations at John Kennedy and Newark airports have been completely halted."
