The Iraqi government media team confirmed today, Thursday, that there is a move to implement electronic payment processes in all government institutions without exception starting at the beginning of next year, 2024. They also issued a warning to holders of electronic payment cards.
Spokesman for the team, Haidar Majid, stated that "the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers issued, two days ago, a circular to official entities, citizens, and employees holding payment cards such as KAY, MasterCard, and Visa Card (the cards used for electronic payments), emphasizing the necessity and importance of exercising caution in trading or shopping with them from unknown or untrustworthy sites or stores, as well as not handing over these cards to unknown individuals or disclosing their secret numbers to protect their funds."
Majid added that "there is a governmental direction at the beginning of the year 2024 towards using electronic payment processes in all government institutions without exception, as per the decisions of the Council of Ministers and the instructions of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani."
He confirmed that "the main relevant entities in the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank, and banks are working to encourage citizens and institutions to automate the electronic payment process in coordination with officially approved electronic payment companies, marking a new civilized phenomenon being introduced in Iraq for the first time in years."
