Blinken: Allowing Aid into Gaza is a Positive Development; Results are the Real Test

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Friday that the United States welcomes Israel's recent efforts to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, but he noted that success will be measured by the outcomes that improve the situation on the ground. Blinken said in a speech alongside European Union leaders in Belgium, "The proof is really in the results, and we will see that in the days and weeks ahead,” also stating, "We will look at indicators of potential famine in Gaza to see if they are decreasing."

Regarding the Israeli strike on a World Central Kitchen aid convoy that resulted in the deaths of seven aid workers, Blinken said: "We look forward to seeing accountability," emphasizing that Israel's responsibility is to enhance efforts to protect civilians in the Gaza Strip to the greatest extent possible.

Earlier today, Israel announced that it would temporarily allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza through its border with the northern sector, according to the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The government statement, issued after U.S. President Joe Biden warned Netanyahu of the need to alleviate humanitarian suffering in Gaza, said, "Israel will permit the delivery of humanitarian aid temporarily through Ashdod and the Erez crossing."

The statement added, "This additional aid will prevent a humanitarian crisis and is essential to ensure the continuation of fighting and to achieve war objectives."
