Apple has warned its users in India and 91 other countries that they may be potential victims of "attacks by spyware mercenaries," based on a notification about a potential threat sent to targeted users via email. Apple stated in the notification, which was reviewed by a media outlet, that "the company discovered that attackers attempted to remotely compromise iPhones." According to the notification, attacks carried out by spyware mercenaries are rare and more complex than typical cybercrime or malware activities. The iPhone manufacturer has been sending such notifications of potential threats several times a year since 2021 and has informed users in over 150 countries in total so far. Some Indian lawmakers previously shared images on social media of a notification from the company stating: "Apple believes that state-sponsored attackers are targeting you and trying to remotely compromise your iPhone." The company later stated that it did not reference "any specific state-sponsored attacker" in those notifications about potential threats.
