Statement from the Ministry of Energy Regarding Gas Cylinders

The Ministry of Energy and Water issued the following statement today, Tuesday, concerning gas cylinders: "First: The Minister of Energy and Water emphasizes the importance of replacing old cylinders with new ones to ensure public safety and to prevent any potential hazards from incidents that could cause harm to individuals or property. Second: Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fayad, prioritizing public safety, directed letters to the General Directorate of Customs and the relevant official authorities requesting them to monitor the land borders and all crossings at the Lebanese borders to prevent smuggling. This is in accordance with decision number 175/2015 and its amendments. He also requested security support by taking necessary measures to avert any potential danger before it occurs. This comes after receiving information through the media and from the Gas Cylinder Distributors Syndicate in Lebanon about the entry of non-manufactured Syrian metal gas cylinders that are deteriorated and do not meet the standard specifications established in Lebanon through border crossings. Third: The Minister of Energy sent a new letter to the concerned companies' association in accordance with decision number 175 dated September 15, 2015, regarding the replacement of metal gas cylinders (Butane/Propane) in the local market. He stressed the importance of continuing to implement the decision and prioritizing the replacement and disposal of the most hazardous gas cylinders in the Lebanese local market, as their usage poses a risk to public safety, as quickly as possible. Minister Fayad reiterated the necessity of following up on this issue with the relevant authorities to take the necessary actions to prevent any possible accidents, God forbid."
