Firefighting teams in Greece have confirmed that they are still controlling the fires that have been raging since Saturday morning, continuing their efforts as strong winds are expected throughout the day. After two weeks of battling hundreds of fires, more than 460 firefighting personnel remain on standby to combat the flames on the islands of Rhodes and Corfu and in the region of Magnesia in central Greece. The firefighting service stated via a phone call: "There are no active fires" in Rhodes, Corfu, and Magnesia, which are the areas of greatest concern to us. They added: "Scattered pockets of fires are being extinguished, but the number of personnel on the ground will not be reduced as long as the large fires have not been extinguished." The Greek Meteorological Service expects wind speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.
After a slight decrease in temperatures over the past two days, the meteorological service predicts a slight rise in temperatures to between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius, and between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius in the central and southern parts of the country. However, the combination of the wind and extreme heat exacerbates the situation and leads to a quicker spread of the fires.
