Former U.S. gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, convicted of sexual abuse charges, was stabbed in the federal prison where he is housed in Florida, according to two sources familiar with the incident. Joe Rojas, president of the local correctional officers' union, stated to CNN that Nassar "was stabbed 10 times in the neck, back, and chest." Rojas noted that prison police were able to save his life and his condition is stable. A statement from the Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate at the United States Penitentiary in Sumterville, Florida, was assaulted. The statement mentioned that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. The inmate, confirmed by a known source to be Nassar, was transferred to the hospital for treatment. Nassar was sentenced in 2018 to up to 175 years in prison after more than 150 women and girls testified in court that he had sexually abused them over the past two decades. Nassar pleaded guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual conduct in Ingham County, Michigan, and admitted to using his trusted medical position to abuse and molest girls under the guise of medical treatment. A total of 156 women provided testimony in court, describing how they went to Nassar for treatment of sports injuries and were assaulted. In 2021, Nassar's victims reached a $380 million settlement with the United States government. In a separate case, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in prison on federal charges related to child exploitation in pornography.
