Legal Setbacks for Trump

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has faced two legal setbacks with the rejection of his request to drop criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, and for retaining classified records after leaving office. These cases are part of a broader legal predicament Trump is encountering, which includes criminal charges in four cases, all while he prepares to compete against President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for November 5. The first-ever trial of a sitting or former U.S. president is set to take place in New York on April 15. U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon in Florida denied Trump's request to dismiss the classified documents charge, claiming they were part of his personal records and not government property. In another setback earlier on Thursday, a judge in Georgia also denied Trump’s request to dismiss the criminal charges against him in a case involving interference in the state's 2020 election, which Trump argued violated his right to free speech. Trump described the criminal charges as politically motivated.
