The official Kuwait News Agency reported today, Wednesday, that Kuwait has formed a new government headed by Sheikh Mohammed Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. Earlier this month, the Emir of the country, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, issued a decree appointing Sheikh Mohammed as Prime Minister and tasked him with proposing members for the new government. The new Prime Minister referred to "the heavy responsibility he and the ministers bear in a new phase of Kuwait's beloved history, filled with challenges and aspirations."
After the new government took the oath, the Emir of Kuwait called for the appointment of experienced and qualified leaders. He stated, "We hope for the return of development, the diversification of income sources, and financial sustainability." He emphasized the commitment of both the legislative and executive authorities to the constitution governing their relationship, saying, "You must apply the law to everyone without exception."
It is expected that Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will maintain the foreign policy of his predecessor, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, including support for Gulf unity, alliances with the West, and good relations with Saudi Arabia. Kuwait will have to address long-standing tensions between the ruling family and its opponents in the divided parliament, which observers say has hindered financial and economic reform. The Kuwaiti parliament holds more influence compared to similar councils in other Gulf countries, and political deadlock over the decades has led to multiple ministerial reshuffles and the dissolution of parliament.
