The Finance and Budget Committee, headed by MP Ibrahim Kanaan, has approved the Renewable Energy Law. Kanaan will hold a press conference in the media hall at the Parliament at 11 AM on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, to explain the details of the law, its reformative and financial importance, and its benefits to the state and citizens, as well as its contribution to securing electricity.
The approval of the law is a crucial step in Lebanon's commitment to ensure that 30% of its total electricity consumption comes from renewable energy sources by 2030. This law establishes a foundation for enhancing distributed renewable energy production by setting forth the main principles for implementing projects using net metering systems in all its forms, and for the sale and purchase of renewable energy through direct power purchase agreements.
The committee meeting was chaired by Kanaan, with the attendance of Minister of Energy and Water in the caretaker government Walid Fayyad, Minister of Finance in the caretaker government Youssef Khalil, and MPs: Alain Aoun, Ihab Matar, Jihad Al-Samad, Hassan Fadlallah, Raji Al-Saad, Adnan Traboulsi, Ali Hassan Khalil, Ghada Ayoub, Ghazi Zaiter, Ghassan Hasbani, Michel Moawad, Fouad Makhzoumi, Yassin Yassin, Melhem Khalaf, Antoine Habshi, Simon Abi Ramia, Ibrahim Mneimneh, Taha Naji, Mark Duh, and Firas Hamdan.
