Jordan: Foiling of Drug Smuggling Attempt from Syria

The Jordanian armed forces foiled a major smuggling attempt at dawn today, Sunday, during a specialized operation in one of their designated areas, involving a large quantity of drugs coming from Syrian territory. The Jordan News Agency reported that "the operation stems from the efforts of the armed forces to maintain the security and stability of the kingdom and protect its borders, in adherence to their national duty towards the country and its leadership."

In this context, a military source responsible in the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces - Arab Army, indicated that "border guard forces, in coordination with military security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department, monitored through front-line surveillance the attempt of a group of smugglers to illegally cross the border from Syrian territory to Jordanian territory."

He added: "Rapid response patrols were deployed and rules of engagement were applied with direct fire on them, resulting in the injury of several smugglers while others fled back into Syrian territory."

He explained that "after intensifying search and inspection operations in the area, a total of 8,773 cannabis packs and 3,141,000 Captagon pills were found, in addition to 376 Kalashnikov rounds and 18,000 Syrian pounds," noting that "all seized items have been handed over to the relevant authorities."

The source emphasized that "the Jordanian armed forces are determined to deal with any threats along the border fronts with strength and firmness, and to counter any efforts aimed at undermining and destabilizing the security of the nation and terrorizing its citizens."
