Extinguishing Fire on Nuclear-Powered Cargo Ship

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced on Monday that "emergency workers extinguished a fire on a nuclear-powered icebreaking cargo ship dating back to the Soviet era." They stated that "the fire broke out on Sunday in one of the cabins of the Soviet-made ship Sevmorput, which is currently docked in Murmansk, northern Russia." The ministry indicated that the fire spread to an area of 30 square meters at its peak and was extinguished without injuries. The owning company, Atomflot, stated in a report: "The fire was extinguished quickly... there are no injuries," and added that there was no threat to the essential support systems or the reactor plant. The government-owned company operating the ship clarified that there were no injuries and no threat to the reactor's safety. The company manages the Russian fleet of nuclear icebreakers and is a subsidiary of the state-owned Rosatom nuclear corporation. The Murmansk region, located in northwestern Russia, shares borders with Finland and Norway, as well as the Barents Sea and the White Sea.
