The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the increase in respiratory diseases and pneumonia cases in China, calling on residents to "take precautionary measures." In a statement published on the platform X (formerly Twitter), the organization stated that it has "formally requested detailed information from China regarding the rise in respiratory illnesses and the outbreak of pneumonia among children," urging for "steps to reduce the risk of respiratory diseases."
A spokesperson for the organization confirmed to AFP the accuracy of the statement. This announcement followed a notable rise in the number of children with respiratory illnesses and pneumonia reported in northern China. The organization is seeking additional information about these cases.
Additionally, it has recommended that residents in China "follow necessary measures to reduce the risks of respiratory diseases," including "recommended vaccinations, avoiding contact with sick individuals, staying home when ill, undergoing testing and receiving medical care when needed, wearing masks when appropriate, ensuring good ventilation, and washing hands regularly." The organization pointed out that Chinese authorities attributed this increase in respiratory illnesses to the lifting of COVID-19 related restrictions and the spread of known pathogens.
