Thanks to a decisive goal scored by Spanish forward Esther González, Gotham FC was crowned the champion of the American Women's Soccer League for the first time in its history after defeating OL Reign 2-1 in the final match last night. Forward Lynn Williams gave Gotham, hailing from the New Jersey-New York area, the lead, concluding the season on a high note just a year after finishing at the bottom of the standings in the country’s top women’s league. Thanks to an impressive individual effort, Rose Lavelle equalized for Reign, coming from Seattle, with a goal in the 29th minute, but her team failed to capitalize on several opportunities in the second half, losing in their third final appearance. The final match attracted significant media and fan interest as it was the last in the career of famous U.S. national team player Megan Rapinoe, a two-time World Cup winner. However, the farewell party ended quickly as Rapinoe unexpectedly exited the game shortly after it began due to injury.
