Dubai Roads Launches Free Smart Umbrella Service

Dubai Roads Launches Free Smart Umbrella Service

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a "free" smart umbrella service at the Al Ghubaiba bus and metro station. The pilot model of this innovative service is designed to facilitate and encourage walking in Dubai, providing residents and visitors with a convenient and sustainable means to shield themselves from the sun and rain. The service was launched in collaboration with the Canadian company UmbraCity, which specializes in smart umbrella sharing services.

Passengers can now borrow these umbrellas for free from one location using their Nol cards. This service is specifically designed to support Dubai’s goal of developing a "20-minute city," where residents can access their daily needs within a 20-minute walk or bike ride. Khaled Al Awadhi, Director of the Transportation Systems Department at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, stated, "By encouraging the use of smart umbrellas that are free to rent with the Nol card, RTA and UmbraCity contribute to creating vibrant, healthy, and inclusive communities throughout Dubai."

The service is currently available on a trial basis at the Al Ghubaiba Metro Station for three months to assess its viability. After the trial period, the authority will evaluate its success and consider expanding its scope.
