Severe Rain Causes Power Outages and Flight Cancellations in South Korea

Heavy rain fell across parts of South Korea today, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and power outages for thousands of homes as the government raised alert levels among officials during the peak of the summer monsoon season. The Ministry of Interior and Safety reported that "more than 4,000 households experienced power outages in the capital, Seoul, due to the heavy rain that began on Sunday," and authorities have evacuated 136 people nationwide by 11 a.m. (02:00 GMT). The Korea Airports Corporation stated that "more than 130 flights were canceled at airports across the country today, while over 270 flights were delayed until 5 p.m. local time." Officials announced the loss of "one person in the city of Busan in the south and injuries to another in South Jeolla Province." In North Korea, the state news agency reported today that "many areas of the country experienced rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters since the morning of Thursday, but no reports of damage were mentioned."
