The World Health Organization has warned that the Latin America and Caribbean region will experience its worst dengue fever season ever this year, attributing the outbreak to global warming and the El Niño climate phenomenon. Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Since the beginning of the year, authorities in the region have recorded more than 3.5 million infections, resulting in 1,000 deaths. Carbas Barbosa, director of the Pan American Health Organization, the regional branch of the World Health Organization, stated that this is concerning as it represents three times the cases reported during the same period in 2023, which was a record year with over 4.5 million cases recorded.
