Senegal Declares Mourning: Shipwreck Claims Lives of 20 Migrants

Senegalese Prime Minister Amadou Ba announced today, Thursday, that around 20 migrants lost their lives this week when their boat sank off the northern coast of Senegal. The migrant support service (Alarm Phone) reported on the X platform that the boat was carrying about 300 people before it sank yesterday, Wednesday, near the city of Saint-Louis, with some reaching the shore while others remain missing. Thousands leave the West African coast each year on perilous journeys to attempt to reach Europe, and the total number of deaths at sea is unknown. Senegal has declared mourning due to several deadly incidents last year, including an incident in which nearly 60 people went missing after their boat was found being swept by waves near Cape Verde.
