Alcaraz Begins Preparations for the US Open with Tough Win in Canada

World number one Carlos Alcaraz started his preparations to defend his title at the US Open with a challenging victory over Ben Shelton, winning 6-3, 7-6 to advance to the third round of the Canadian Open last night. In his first match since winning the Wimbledon title, the 20-year-old needed some time to settle on the hard courts in Canada, but there was no doubt about the final result as he extended his winning streak to 13 matches.

Alcaraz stated on the court in front of a sold-out crowd in Toronto: "I try to focus on each match and not think about the winning streak but continue what I am doing." He added, "I always see that the first match in any tournament is never easy, especially against Ben, who has powerful shots."

The Spanish player continued: "It was hard to control the rhythm, but I am very happy with the win and getting another chance in the tournament."

Alcaraz wasn't at his usual level, but his American opponent, ranked 41st in the world and who has only won once in his career against a top-ten player, was unable to capitalize on the opportunities presented to him.

Alcaraz expressed frustration during the second set, pointing to his team's box and talking to himself after missing shots he usually makes. With neither able to break serve, Alcaraz demonstrated his experience in the tiebreak, winning four consecutive points to take it 7-3.

In the next round, Alcaraz will face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who defeated Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
