The Royal Netherlands Air Force stated on Monday that Danish Air Force intercepted two Russian bombers spotted over Denmark heading towards the area monitored by the Netherlands on behalf of NATO. It added that the Dutch F-16 aircraft were scrambled to respond on Monday morning, but the Russian bombers were intercepted before they could enter the airspace monitored by the Netherlands for NATO and have since returned. A spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Air Force indicated that aircraft are intercepted if they do not have a distinct identification code, a flight plan, or engaged in mutual communication. He also noted that Russian aircraft violating or approaching the airspace of a European nation is not uncommon.
