Former U.S. Senator and Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman passed away on Wednesday at the age of 82 in New York due to complications from a fall at his home, his family reported. A statement indicated that "his wife Hadassah and family members were with him when he passed away." Lieberman was the Democratic nominee for vice president in the 2000 elections, which were won by Republican George W. Bush over Democrat Al Gore. He failed in his attempt to secure the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, affected by his support for the Iraq War. Lieberman was first elected to the Senate in 1988. He lost in the Democratic primary in 2006 but retained his seat by winning the general election as an independent candidate. He endorsed Republican Senator John McCain for president in a speech at the Republican National Convention in 2008. However, he later supported Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020, both Democratic candidates. Lieberman retired from the Senate in 2013 after four terms, each lasting six years.
