The Integrity Unit of Athletics announced today, Thursday, the four-year suspension of Italian runner Ahmed Abdul Wahid and the forfeiture of his silver medal from the 2022 European Athletics Championships due to a violation of anti-doping rules. Abdul Wahid won the silver medal at the European Championships in Munich last August, but a urine sample he submitted revealed the presence of meldonium, a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The 27-year-old athlete was provisionally suspended in September of last year, and despite his repeated denials of intentional use of meldonium, the Integrity Unit issued this sanction after confirming the presence of the prohibited substance in his second sample as well.
The Integrity Unit stated in a release: "All results obtained by the athlete at the 2022 European Championships and since August 19, 2022, will be nullified, with all the consequences that arise from that, including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points, monetary prizes, and funds obtained."
The Integrity Unit also mentioned that Abdul Wahid may appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport within 30 days.
