There are many potential risk factors for bowel cancer, but one expert has revealed the two most important things you can do to reduce the risk of this malignant disease. Oncologist Ursina Titlbom explained that it is difficult to detect bowel cancer early due to often ignoring symptoms. Therefore, Titlbom shared two pieces of advice she follows "personally" to protect herself from bowel cancer:
- **Do not ignore abnormal symptoms or warning signs (even if you are young)**
Ignoring unusual health symptoms may delay a diagnosis and reduce your chances of survival. Titlbom warned: "Be cautious of any changes in bowel habits. If you are having normal bowel movements but later experience frequent constipation or notice blood in your stool, and you feel abdominal pain, it is advisable to talk to a doctor." She also mentioned that you should consult a doctor if you experience unexplained diarrhea, fatigue, or sudden anemia. Other possible symptoms of bowel cancer include rectal bleeding, anal or rectal pain, and unexplained weight loss.
- **Maintain an active lifestyle with a healthy diet**
Bowel cancer is often associated with poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity. Red meat and processed foods are linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer. Titlbom explained: "There is no perfect indicator for colon cancer, but worldwide, a healthy lifestyle may help prevent it." The British National Health Service states that bowel cancer can be caused by genetic changes, lifestyle, and environmental factors. However, having certain health conditions can make you more susceptible to bowel cancer.
