Emergency services in Murcia, southeastern Spain, announced today, Sunday, that at least 13 people have died due to a fire in neighboring nightclubs, while rescue teams continue to search for individuals whose fates remain unknown after the incident. One survivor said, "Five family members and two friends are missing."
Diego Seral, a member of the Spanish National Police, revealed to reporters that victims were found at the La Fonda nightclub, one of the three adjacent nightclubs, which suffered the most damage from the fire, particularly its collapsed roof. He added that the collapse made it difficult to locate the victims, and it is challenging to pinpoint the exact location where the fire started. Seral noted that identifying the bodies will take time. Emergency services indicated that the death toll has been rising throughout the day, reaching 13.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. Maria Dolores Albeyan, spokesperson for the Theater nightclub, disclosed that the fire initially broke out in the neighboring La Fonda nightclub before spreading to the adjacent clubs.
The Mayor of Murcia, Jose Ballesta, declared three days of mourning for the victims, and flags were lowered outside the Murcia Town Hall.
