Understanding the "Secret" Behind the Sound of a Growling Stomach When Hungry

Understanding the

Sounds coming from the stomach, commonly known as "growling," often cause embarrassment. However, experts confirm that these sounds are natural and should not make you feel ashamed. The phenomenon is known as "borborygmi" and is the result of muscle contractions in the stomach and intestines while digesting food. Donna Powell, a gastroenterologist, stated, "When the digestive tract is empty because you haven't eaten, natural contractions create noise as they move air and fluids through the stomach and intestines."

Although there may be no food to move within the digestive system, hunger is believed to trigger the release of hormones that cause contractions, leading to growling sounds.

Is there any way to alleviate the bothersome symptoms of an empty stomach? Experts suggest that drinking water may be enough to temporarily silence the growl. Eating your meals more slowly can also help, as it slows the digestion process, making you feel full for a longer time. Additionally, replacing three large meals with four to six smaller ones can improve digestion and alleviate the condition.
