Meta and the Reactivation of Trump's Facebook Account

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is considering reactivating former U.S. President Donald Trump's account on the platform, with a final decision expected in the coming weeks. An informed source told CNN that this decision, likely one of the most significant in the company's history, is being reviewed by an internal working group comprising leaders from various departments within the organization. The group includes representatives from the company's public policy, communications, content policy, and safety and integrity teams.

Trump was banned from both Facebook and Instagram following the attack on the U.S. Capitol in January 2021. Initially, the ban was indefinite, but the decision was later modified, and the company stated it would reconsider allowing Trump back on the platforms after a two-year period. This two-year period expires on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

The company is not expected to announce its decision on Saturday. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone stated to CNN that the announcement would occur "in the coming weeks." A return to Facebook could potentially benefit Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, as he has 34 million followers on Facebook and 23 million on Instagram.
